Edwin Voorhees (1918-1999), painter of watercolor seascapes and landscapes. Ed studied at the Arts Student League in N.Y.C. for many years under masters such as Frank Riley and Daniel Green, with further studies in the US and abroad at numerous workshops He retired early from a successful career with DuPont to persue his passion for painting for the remainder of his life. He exhibited throughout the Southeast region and was represented by numerous galleries in NC.
Mildred Voorhees, (1924-2007), painter of watercolors and oil landscapes and interior and still lifes. As lifelong wife and companion to Ed, Millie studied extensively in the US and abroad. Her work was widely recognized for its richness of color and pattern development within her chosen subject matter, whether a Yorkshire fishing village or a Provencial market scene.
Susan Voorhees, b:1949, works in both pastels and oils. Susan, lives in Asheville, NC. She is a member of the Asheville Gallery of Art. A career as an occupational therapist has been woven with her love for painting. She has studied at the Arts Students League and with noted pastel artists in Baltimore, MD.
Jane Voorhees, b: 1951, full time painter in watercolors, oils and pastels. Jane studied art and anthropology at Eckerd College and has taken numerous workshops with artists Skip Lawrence, Dan Essig and others. She maintains a home studio in Asheville, NC where she also creates her line of watercolor reproduction cards and calendars. She is a member of the NC Watercolor Society and the Asheville Gallery of Art. Jane teaches at John C. Campbell Folk School and privately in Asheville.
David Voorhees, b:1950, potter, co-owner of Hand in Hand Gallery with wife Molly Sharp. He started his pottery studies while a student at Sewanee and has taken many workshops with noted clay artists such as David Leach, Don Reitz, Norm Schulman and Jenny Lind. After years of focusing on underglaze painting on porcelain, he has recently built a wood-fired car kiln and is producing a broad range of both stoneware and porcelain that is soda fired in the wood kiln. He fires raku pottery on an occasional basis. David teaches at the John C. Campbell Folk School in NC and North House Folk School in MN.
Chad Voorhees, b: 1955, a furniture designer and builder for many years achieving national recognition before taking on a design career in the luxury yacht industry. Chad maintains his woodworking shop for the occasional choice commission. Chad studied art at Virginia Commonwealth University where he met his wife, Amy.
Edwin H. Voorhees, III(Trace), b: 1967 Edwin's grandson, Ted's son. Trace finds expression in his photography and welded steel sculpture.
Elizabeth Voorhees Becker, b: 1979. Edwin's granddaughter, David's daughter. Liz is a graduate of College of Charleston in studio art with studies in painting, sculpture and photography. A returning Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa, Liz used her photography to capture the sights and village people of Niger where she served. Liz has continued exploring painting and is now focusing on photography, with food as her favorite subject. A new mother of Seamus, our youngest artist in the family.
Susie Little, b: 1987. Edwin's granddaughter, Susan's daughter. Susie attended an Arts Magnet high school in Baltimore, MD and has recently graduated from the prestigious Cooper Union and is living in NYC. She has had a longterm love of art working in every medium that she can get her hands on: sculpture, painting, photography, costume design and with a recent focused interest in jewelry design.
Molly Sharp Voorhees, b: 1947, jeweler, co-owner of Hand in Hand Gallery with husband David. Molly first studied jewelry while living in England and raising her two children. She further studied after relocating back to the US at Arrowmont and Wild Acres, and Penland, where she and David met. Molly works in sterling silver and gold, incorporating natural beach pebbles and found objects into her jewelry designs. Molly teaches at John C. Campbell Folk School, North House Folk School and privately at her studio in Zirconia, NC.
Amy Cusick Voorhees, b: 1955, studied art at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is now painting landscapes and city scapes in oils. Amy and Chad live in Morehead City, NC.
Caren Goldman, b: 1947 Oldest son Ted's wife and author of numerous magazine and journal articles on alternative health, spirituality and art. Author of Healing Words, Discovering Self and Across theThreshold, Into the Questions.
Kirk Voorhees, b: 1947 Retired owner of a large commercial cabinetmaking business in the DC area. Has had major woodworking commisions with the National Cathedral and Union Station.
Edwin H. Voorhees, Jr. (Ted), b. 1945, a semi-retired Epsicopal priest lives in St. Augustine, FL and Asheville, NC. His creative spirit has led him to work on walking sticks, some carved, some covered with snake skins.
Christopher Voorhees, b. 1970 Edwin's grandson, Ted's son. Christopher lives on his mother's farm in Fairmont, NC where he captures images of beauty there through his photography. Though confined to a wheelchair, Christopher is not fettered in his enthusiasm for his artwork, love of nature and people.
